Each belt from Yellow through Red includes two grade levels. The lower grade has only one stripe (eg, 8 grade yellow) and the upper grades has 2 and 3 stripes (eg. 7 grade yellow). The plain and double black stripe in each grade is called "recommended." The single and three black stripe is called "decided." The senior grades in each rank is denoteded by a single black stripe running in the centre of the belt from one end to the next.

For 1st and 2nd degree black belts, the "recommended" rank is a probationary stage. Upon receiving a 1st degree or 2nd degree recommended, students must test successfully for the "decided" rank within six months, or else they return to the rank immediately below the recommended one. They then are allowed to test again for the recommended rank. There are no recommended levels for 3rd through 9th degree black belts.
